The move: tips and rules for moving home without stress and saving money

From a survey carried out by AIP, the Italian Association of Psychology, moving is one of the three main causes of stress (together with separation and bereavement).

When we are about to move house we are assailed by a series of questions, first of all whether to rely on a specialized company, paying for the professionalism that is offered to us, and if we do not have too bulky furniture and sufficient manual skills, do everything by ourselves, with the risk however of stress and inconvenience.

The best way to deal with a move is to organize it in time, in order to dilute the amount of work in the days of the move, with the possibility of choosing the most advantageous offer more calmly if you rely on specialized companies (often you can get an estimate of the expenses also on the web, by consulting the various specialized sites).

If you opt for the do-it-yourself move you will need boxes, parcel tape, bubble wrap, a van, and old blankets and ropes to securely tie the furniture onto it. If booked in advance, a van with unlimited mileage can be rented at an advantageous rate.
The most difficult part of the do-it-yourself can be the disassembly and reassembly of the furniture, in particular the kitchen, which if it is not too valuable is often decided to leave it in the old house.

If we want to save money, it will be necessary to reduce to the bone the services to be entrusted to the company, for example giving up the packaging service, or disassembling and reassembling the furniture by yourself or bringing the closed boxes to street level to save time and money.

Especially in large cities there are companies specialized in collective removals, which allow you to save up to 30% in exchange for a certain flexibility in the hour: removals to be carried out in the same area of the city are aggregated on the same day.

If possible, you can save up to 15% by avoiding the move in periods when the house changes frequently (June, July) and it is always advisable to make a list of the objects to be transported, having it approved by the manager of the company, remembering to photograph or film all the objects before packing, to avoid unpleasant misunderstandings if they break during transport, and try the appliances in the presence of the person responsible. For a small surcharge, it is advisable to insure fragile or valuable items.
